Company PhilosophySmart Builders, Inc was created to bring quality green building to Western North Carolina, and to subvert the current paradigm of building inefficiencies with sustainable construction utilizing innovative building technologies and modern management practices.
We believe structures should be built to last, for the long-term health of the occupants and the planet. Nature is our inspiration and guide.
Smart Builders incorporates the latest technologies including state-of-the-art CAD software and scheduling software to create an “on-time”, project management approach to construction. By constantly organizing and prioritizing, and utilizing off-site production, building time exposed to the elements is greatly reduced.
Smart Builders preferred method of construction utilizes SIPS (Structurally Insulated Panels), and a “systems” approach to building where engineered components are used to improve the consistency, efficiency, and quality of home building.
At Smart Builders we build superior green homes differently than their traditionally-built, inefficient counterparts. A lot of green builders rely on tweaking the traditional method of framing, or stick-building. Adding a few green materials and strategies to stick-building increases, but does not optimize efficiency. That’s why Smart Builders uses a Systems Approach to building that relies on Structurally Insulated Panels (SIPS).
Systems ApproachOur Systems Approach considers all of the mechanical components that go into a structure as well as the homeowner’s needs in order to optimize the efficiency of construction, energy use, maintenance and healthiness.
SIPS, which are custom engineered and manufactured offsite, take the place of stick building in the Smart Builders System Approach. Stick built houses worked great until the advent of insulation, electricity, and indoor plumbing. Mold, high energy bills, and leaky building envelopes that plague traditional stick built homes are a thing of the past with a Smart Built SIPS house. SIPS structures are built more quickly and create much less waste than traditional structures, so it’s difficult to see stick building as a viable green option.

There is a lot of competition now
in
Green Building. Every contractor
with a bucket of low-VOC paint
and some bamboo flooring is
a self-proclaimed "green builder."
But that doesn't mean they can
build a true Green Structure.
